Egon Schiele produced a prolific body of work before dying in the flu epidemic of 1918 at the age of 28. His oils have often been reproduced and are well recognized, but this volume concentrates on drawings and watercolours drawn from public and private collections around the world.

Jane Kallir's other books include Egon Schiele (1994); and Egon Schiele: The Complete Works with a Biography and Catalogue Raisonné (1990; expanded 1998). She has curated exhibitions of Schiele's work throughout the world, and in 2001-2002, she organized 'Gustav Klimt - Oskar Kokoschka - Egon Schiele' in Rome and Trieste.
