Philip Roth war Träger der wichtigsten US-amerikanischen Literaturpreise und hoch geehrt von der internationalen Schriftstellervereinigung P.E.N. 1998 erhielt Philip Roth für 'Amerikanisches Idyll' den Pulitzerpreis. Im gleichen Jahr wurde ihm im Weißen Haus die National Medal of Arts verliehen, und 2001 erhielt er die höchste Auszeichnung der American Academy of Arts and Letters, die Gold Medal, mit der unter anderem John Dos Passos, William Faulkner und Saul Bellow ausgezeichnet worden sind. Er hat zweimal den National Book Award und den National Book Critics Circle Award erhalten und dreimal den PEN/Faulkner Award und außerdem den PEN/Nabokov Award und den PEN/Saul Bellow Award. 2011 wurde ihm der Man Booker International Prize verliehen. Der 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, geborene Autor mit europäisch-jüdischem Hintergrund schrieb unermüdlich, schonungslos und in drastischer Sprache über seine Landsleute. Das erste Buch mit Short Storys erschien 1959. Die folgenden Romane und Erz

ählungen über die jüdische Mittelklasse der Nachkriegszeit, über ihre Beziehungen, Zwänge und Neurosen, lösten oft Skandale aus. Bis 1992 unterrichtete Roth an verschiedenen Universitäten. Liebe, Sexualität und Tod waren bis zuletzt die Themen seines Werks. Philip Roth ist 2018 gestorben.

Dirk van Gunsteren, 1953 geboren, übersetzte u.a. Jonathan Safran Foer, Colum McCann, Thomas Pynchon, Philip Roth, T.C. Boyle und Oliver Sacks. 2007 erhielt er den Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt-Preis.
