Je me nomme Natalis Delpierre. Je suis né en 1761, à Grattepanche, un village de la Picardie. Mon père était cultivateur. Il travaillait sur les terres du marquis d'Estrelle. Ma mère l'aidait de son mieux. Mes sœurs et moi, nous faisions comme ma mère. Mon père ne possédait aucun bien et ne devait jamais avoir rien en propre. En même temps que cultivateur, il était chantre au lutrin, chantre « confiteor ». Il avait une voix forte qu'on entendait du petit cimetière attenant à l'église. Il aurait donc pu être curé - ce que nous appelons un paysan trempé dans l'encre. Sa voix, c'est tout ce que j'ai hérité de lui, à peu près. Mon père et ma mère ont travaillé dur. Ils sont morts dans la même année, en 79. Dieu ait leur âme !

Jules Gabriel Verne (8 February 1828 ¿ 24 March 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well documented, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time.
