Stoker himself made little money from the book's success, and would die in poverty, but his legacy shows no sign of waning; the legendary figure of Dracula has spawned countless books, films, and television series. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form as we know it today.

Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 - 20 April 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula, which defined the nature of the vampire in popular culture. He was the author of eleven other novels, although during his lifetime he was better known as the personal assistant of the actor Henry Irving, and as business manager of the Lyceum Theatre.
