The concept of multiuser diversity (MUD) has been well studied in the literature and exploited in the design of channel-aware "opportunistic" scheduling schemes that control in a dynamic way how the users can access the shared air-link resources in wireless systems. This concept was originally initiated in a research work where it was shown that in order to maximize the sum capacity (bits/sec) of the network we should always schedule the user with the best instantaneous channel quality.
