Mon is educationally a backward district as compared to other districts of Nagaland. Out of 259604 of its population only 42.25 percent are literate (Census 2001).The district is having 193 Govt. schools out which 143 are primary, 40 middle schools and 9 high schools with 1 higher secondary. There are 54 private schools with 30 primary only and 24 with upper primary. It can be mentioned here that Mon district seems to have sufficient number of educational institutions but most of the schools; especially in rural areas are under enrolled. The academic results of the students in the High School Leaving Certificate Examinations (HSLCE) continued to show a very poor performance and comparatively poorer than any other districts of the state. It also noticed a high rate of school dropouts in the district. The overall progress of education is very slow. However, no commendable work of NGOs, Civil Society including the parents had so far ventured out to improve its educational system thereby passing the failure of the students to one another. There are moments in history when a new direction has to be given to an age-old process. That moment is now.
