I wrote and illustrated the Douglas the Rabbit Adventure Series Books, for children ages 3-10, in memory of my father, Donald Walker Perkins. The first book, The Original Douglas the Rabbit Story, introduces Douglas and his adventurous spirit. The second book, Douglas the Rabbit Makes Some Friends, goes back to the previous spring to describe how Douglas befriends a skunk, a fox, a chipmunk, and others as they work together to help a bird find a missing egg. The third book, Douglas the Rabbit's Fall Field Trip, takes Douglas and Sammy the Skunk on another outing to Farmer Brown's farm, where they enjoy fall treats and narrowly escape raspberry pickers and Buster the Dog. In the last book, Douglas the Rabbit's Winter Holiday Surprise, Douglas invites all his friends to a special winter gathering to celebrate the friendship they share. Each story highlights nature's beauty and seasonal change, and concludes with fun facts to help answer questions that may arise. Douglas the Rabbit is a character that my dad created for me when I was a girl. The first story stays true to the curiosity, anticipation, and humor he stirred in me way back then. The three sequels reflect my own everyday adventures with my kids and pets. Enjoy!
Autorenporträt
Before kids, I had a busy professional life as a lawyer, teacher, and caseworker. When we had our first child and moved overseas to Prague, I put that career on hold. Later, when we settled in Wisconsin to raise our three kids and fourteen pets, story telling provided a creative outlet and great fun. I was thrilled later to return to my hometown of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, after decades away, to live close enough to the ocean to watch the boats, the weather, and the wildlife. Still, I wasn't prepared to discover a gray seal pup one cold winter day, right in our front yard. What ensued was a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the response and care provided by Marine Mammals of Maine. I hope I never forget the sunny spring day when the seal pup was released in Casco Bay. This book is my way of sharing all that I learned and saying thanks for this inspiring experience.
