Reise ohne Ziel

Joe Pipkin ist nicht Joe Pipkin. Er, der für seine Freunde aus einer kleinen Stadt in Illinois der unumstrittene Anführer ist, berstend vor Energie, tollkühn, wagemutig, schlurft aus dem Haus; hat sich heute, an Halloween, nicht einmal verkleidet. Er leidet. Woran, wissen seine acht Freunde nicht, aber sie müssen ihm helfen. Zum Geisterhaus sollen sie gehen, sagt er. Dort will er sie später treffen. Doch Pipkin kommt nie an. Er wird davongetragen, in unbekannte Länder und vergangene Zeiten. Eine turbulente Reise beginnt. Die kleinen Helden fliegen ihrem Freund hinterher: auf Besen, als Drachen und von Blättern getragen. Sie wollen Pipkin retten, der in jeder Epoche rätselhaft verkleidet auftaucht und wieder verschwindet. Der amerikanische Autor Ray Bradbury, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois, geboren, entfacht hier ein Feuerwerk der Phantasie. Die acht Jungen stöbern in ägyptischen Grabkammern, entkommen in Britannien nur knapp der Sense des Totengottes Samhain und steigen hinab in mexikanische Katakomben zu den Toten, deren Familien keine Grabstätten bezahlen konnten. Sonne und Finsternis, Leben und Tod, die Urangst des "Nicht-wieder-Aufwachens": Ohne erhobenen didaktischen Zeigefinger zeigt Ray Bradburys wilder Ritt durch Zeit und Raum, dass die Ursprünge des Kultes tiefschichtiger sind, als es ausgehöhlte Kürbisse und schaurige Verkleidung erahnen lassen.
