The long fuse of rebellion has already been lit, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and preserve the colony for King and Crown. Jamie Fraser's wife, Claire, is a time-traveller, as are his daughter and son-in-law. Jamie Fraser hopes the time-travelers in his family are wrong about the future. But only time will tell.
DIANA GABALDON is the author of the international bestselling Outlander novels and Lord John Grey series. She says that the Outlander series started by accident: 'I decided to write a novel for practice in order to learn what it took to write a novel, and to decide whether I really wanted to do it for real. I did - and here we all are trying to decide what to call books that nobody can describe, but that fortunately most people seem to enjoy.' And enjoy them they do - in their millions, all over the world. Published in 42 countries and 38 languages, in 2014 the Outlander novels were made into an acclaimed TV series starring Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Caitríona Balfe as Claire. Diana lives with her husband and dogs in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I challenge anyone to read just a few pages of this monumental book and not, within moments, disappear alongside Claire through the stones, to another time and place. I found myself 10 years ago, embarking on my Outlander TV journey. I was literally sucked into Diana's dramatic story (the line between reality and fiction as fragile as the pages of this book, held between Jamie's tapping finger and thumb). Only now, over a decade later, 8 seasons and 101 episodes of extraordinary Television, do I find myself with some sadness, looking back on this epic journey, yearning to do it all again. The joy of this book though, is that one can, simply by reading again... Sam Heughan

In The Fiery Cross, Claire and Jamie Fraser find themselves caught in the growing tensions of pre-Revolutionary America, trying to build a life on Fraser’s Ridge while danger brews all around them. As they prepare for war and protect their family, loyalties are tested and the past refuses to stay buried. With tensions rising and personal stakes running high, the fifth book of the Outlander series explores love, loyalty, and the quiet moments between looming battles.
As always, Diana Gabaldon delivers a beautifully written, immersive story full of emotional complexity and historical richness. I loved reconnecting with the characters and seeing their lives evolve in this new world. However, the pacing was undeniably slow in the middle with long stretches of daily life that, while atmospheric, didn’t always feel necessary. One thing that did take away from the experience a bit was the oddly frequent mention of Brianna’s breasts. It felt excessive at times and distracted from an otherwise well-drawn character. That said, the final part of the book does bring a sense of resolution and emotional weight that makes the slower pace feel more purposeful. While not super action-packed, the quieter developments and character moments toward the end reminded me why I’m invested in this series. It may not be a dramatic cliffhanger, but it still made me curious to see where the story goes next.
4 stars – a slower installment, but still full of heart, history, and rewarding moments (even if we got a little too much of Bree’s anatomy).
