Er gilt als einer der ideellen Wegbereiter der Französischen Revolution und als einer der bedeutendsten Pädagogen der Neuzeit. Seine erziehungs- und demokratietheoretischen Gedanken übten einen großen Einfluss auf Kant, Fichte, Goethe, Schiller, Pestalozzi und Marx aus, um nur einige zu nennen.
