Upper airway evaluation and assessment of its interactions with craniofacial development and growth has been the subject of interest in several health care-related research areas such as otolaryngology, speech pathology, pediatrics, and dentistry. Upper airway obstruction tends to alter breathing, which can have a significant impact on the normal development of craniofacial structures, causing deficiencies in transverse maxillary growth, as well as the cause of rotational growth of the back of the mandible. These anomalies require early detection, variety of investigational techniques ranging from simple visual inspection to technologically sophisticated imaging modalities have been used to evaluate the structural and functional properties of the upper air way. Many patients with sleep apnea have reduced pharyngeal area as documented by several techniques, including x-ray cephalometry, fluoroscopy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The purpose of this library discussion is to describe various investigative methods which is used to describe upper air way.
