Nach außen als normale Strafvollzugseinrichtung getarnt, erhält das Gefängnis 1956 eine Sonderstellung. Hier sperrt die Staatssicherheit besonders gefährliche »Staatsfeinde« ein. Bautzen II dient der Inhaftierung von Oppositionellen, Spionen, Republikflüchtlingen und deren Fluchthelfern aus dem Westen sowie von Abtrünnigen innerhalb des Staats- und Militärapparates der DDR. Mit dem Zusammenbruch der SED-Diktatur 1989 endet auch die Geschichte des Stasi-Gefängnisses Bautzen II.
