According to World Tourism Organization (WTO), tourism industry is the world's number one export earner ahead of automobile, Petrolchemicals and food industries. The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) index indicates that Tourism is the largest business sector in the world economy, employing about 200 million people. In 2004, the industry generated $5.49 trillion accounting for between 8% and 12% world employment. In sixty countries it is the number one export, while in 80% of the countries tourism is among the five top export earners.
