The growing daily generation of solid urban waste and the continued inadequate disposal in open dumps represent one of the major challenges facing municipal administrations. Considering the changes arising from the new regulatory framework for basic sanitation, with Law 14.026/2020, this research aims to assess the impacts and recent movements of municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Sousa-PB, in light of the main changes arising from this regulatory framework. Thus, there is a need to better understand the new reality of the municipalities of Paraíba, especially the numerous challenges that public managers are facing in drawing up plans and strategies to effectively meet the new deadlines for environmentally appropriate final disposal of waste, under penalty of civil and criminal liability. In this context, it is necessary for the Municipal Government to assume the responsibility conferred on it by the Federal Constitution, to guarantee an ecologically balanced environment for all, and to promote sustainable development for future generations, through effective actions aimed at solving problems in this sector.
