Leadership skills tend to be hierarchical, with different skills required at different levels of responsibility. (Yukl, 1990) Leaders emphasize different behaviors throughout roles in an organization. (Jacobs, 1995) This hierarchical behavior holds true in the military environment. (Owen, 1995) The purpose of this investigation is to determine the critical leadership behaviors required at the strategic level of leadership in the U.S. Air Force. A sample of 100 Air War College (AWC) students will complete a 5-minute survey ranking the importance of eleven basic leadership behaviors. The behaviors are from an off-the-shelf version of Yukl's taxonomy of management, the managerial practice survey (MPS). The eleven behaviors are Informing; Consulting and Delegating; Planning and Organizing; Problem Solving; Clarifying Roles and Objectives; Monitoring Operations and Environment; Motivating; Recognizing and Rewarding; Supporting and Mentoring; Managing Conflict and Team Building; and Networking. It has been widely used in civilian research and is not copyrighted.
