The main objective of this study is to investigate factors that affect learning English autonomously in grade 10 Dire Dawa Sabian Preparatory and Secondary School. Descriptive survey design was employed in this study. This book may raise awareness on the learners' part on how to be responsible for their own learning and gives some hint on the use of learning strategies which are the underlying factor to learn English independently. If teachers and students are able to read it, they can be informed about autonomous learning. The study will also indicate the major factors that impede the implementation of autonomous learning and will suggest possible measures and actions about how to overcome the problems identified. Finally, since research in the area of learner autonomy is limited in Ethiopian high school context, this study will stimulate further investigation and serve as preliminary idea for any interested researcher in the area. It would also be a good source of reference forteachers and students as additional knowledge.
