The study arose from the need to ascertain the extent to which the development, spread and air-play of the emerging genre of music on radio influenced lifestyle of students of tertiary institutions in Lagos. The study adopted survey as its method to achieve its purpose, while the three instruments for data collection were the questionnaire, an interview schedule and an observation schedule. The result indicates that the genre of music is very appealing and attractive to tertiary institutions students. This is shown in the choice of words students use in communicating among themselves, the way they dress as well as their choice of career later in life. The study concluded that the majority of students search for role models in the hip hop world, as they see the lifestyle of such hip hop music artistes as worthy of emulation. The study recommends among other things that if the ills inherent in hip hop lyrics and culture are removed, hip hop music would be useful to tertiary institution students, the nation and the society at large as it could be used to contribute its quota to the economy as well as provide jobs for the teeming unemployed graduates of tertiary institutions.
