It was born of a feudal social order and was its most important attribute. In an era of political fragmentation, there was no general law governing the position of peasants and their duties. As early as the 15th century, peasants were free to leave the land they lived on and move to another landowner, paying debts to the former owner and a special duty to use the yard and the land - the elderly. But already at that time, the princes began to issue letters of commendation in favour of landowners, limiting peasant access, i.e. the right of villagers to "move from parish to parish, from village to village" for one period of the year - a week before and after Yuriev's day (26 November O.S.).
