Nowadays, living in a "smart home" does not seem any more as a distant dream. As we look back on our lives and track our unparalleled technological progress and all the smart things we have given life to, it was a matter of time to have a full control of our automated home at our fingertips. There were times when some of the most talked-about home automation devices appeared gimmicky and expensive but as we have witnessed throughout the years, the rapid pace at which technology evolves has changed the entire home automation landscape. This project aims to develop a hybrid system, that is an interplay of two technologies: Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) referred to as the most widely installed (LAN) technology and ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) protocol used as a communication among devices used for home automation. By allowing these two technologies to coexist within the same environment, we can utilize their advantages and craft a home automation solution that has the convenience of using a standard protocol like Ethernet and the affordability of ZigBee in terms of low cost, low power consumption and remarkable performance in environments with low signal-to-noise ratio.
