Auch in diesem Buch ist die Protagonistin alles andere als eine strahlende, sympathische Heldin. Im zarten Alter von sieben Jahren hat sie die Morde an ihrer Mutter und ihren beiden Schwestern miterlebt, ihren Bruder Ben vor Gericht der Taten beschuldigt, und seither wird ihr ganzes Leben davon bestimmt. Damit meine ich nicht nur die emotionalen Narben - und die hat sie definitiv. Sie trinkt zuviel, sie kann oft tagelang kaum das Bett verlassen, gelähmt von Depressionen und Antriebslosigkeit. Sie stiehlt alles, was sie in die Finger bekommt. Sie kann sich kaum dazu bewegen, Lebensmittel für sich und ihre ständig hungrige Katze zu kaufen. Sie hat überlebt, aber irgendwie ist ihr Leben seither erstarrt, fast schon vorbei.
Sie hat nie gelernt, ihr Leben wirklich selber in die Hand zu nehmen. Auch über zwanzig Jahre später lebt sie immer noch von den letzten Resten großzügiger Spendengelder, sie hat nie gearbeitet oder auch nur einen Beruf erlernt... Ihr Jugend hindurch ist sie von entferntem Verwandten zu entferntem Verwandten abgeschoben worden, da sie immer wieder durch ihr aggressives, unverschämtes Verhalten auffiel - einmal ging sie sogar soweit, den Schoßhund ihrer Tante zu misshandeln und dabei ausversehen zu töten. So verständlich ihr Zorn auf das Schicksal auch ist, so dachte ich mir als Leserin doch öfter: jetzt komm, du musst jetzt langsam mal aufstehen und dein Leben in den Griff bekommen! Aber das ist natürlich einfacher als gesagt, und im Endeffekt macht sie die ersten wichtigen Schritte nicht, um endlich zu heilen, sondern nur, um mehr Geld aus der Tragödie herauszuschlagen. Mehr möchte ich hier noch nicht verraten, aber an dieser Stelle beginnt eine widerwillige Reise Libbys zu sich selbst.
Für mich sind die Bücher von Gillian Flynn nicht wirklich Thriller. Psychologische Geschichten von Gewalt, Verbrechen, Sucht und Hilflosigkeit, ja. Düstere Familiengeheimnisse, abgründige Kleinstadtgeschichten. Fehlgeleitete Charakter, moralische Zweideutigkeit... Wie oben schon gesagt: für mich entwickelt diese originelle Mischung einen unglaublichen Sog, und dadurch sind die Bücher auch von vorne bis hinten spannend - es ist eben nicht immer die typische Thrillerspannung, manchmal ist sie eher langsam und schleppend, oder unterschwellig halb verborgen. Ich denke, da muss jeder mal reinlesen und selber entscheiden, ob ihm diese Mischung gefällt.
Der Schreibstil schwankt zwischen den oft nüchteren, fast beißenden Gedanken Libbys, ihrem schwarzem Humor, hastig unterdrückter leiser Hoffnung, ihrer unbestimmten Sehnsucht nach einem gesünderen, harmonischeren Leben... Sie beschönigt nichts, gerade nicht ihre eigenen Fehler, und genau deswegen funktioniert der Schreibstil für mich so gut: er ist ehrlich, schonungslos.
Manche Passagen sehen wir auch durch die Augen anderer Charaktere, aber diese Schonungslosigkeit zieht sich durch das ganze Buch... Und dabei wird immer klarer, dass gut und böse selten klar umrissene Konzepte sind.
Gillian Flynns Bücher sind für mich das, was man im englischen "aquired taste" nennt: etwas, an dessen Geschmack man sich erstmal gewöhnen muss, und dann liebt man es - oder man hasst es. Ich liebe die Bücher, und wenn ich einmal eines angefangen habe, kann ich es kaum noch weglegen! Am Besten, man löst sich direkt von Anfang an von allen Erwartungen, die möglicherweise durch den Klappentext oder den Ausdruck "Thriller" geweckt werden; meiner Meinung nach lesen sich die Bücher am Besten, wenn man nicht versucht, sie in eine bestimmte Schublade zu stecken.
