Diabetes mellitus is widely recognized as one of the leading cause of death. In 2008,it was the seventh leading cause of death. In 2006,among people aged 65 years or older, heart disease was noted on 68 percent of diabetes.Diabetes is associated with long term complications that affect most parts of the body.Uncontrolled diabetes can complicate pregnancy, and birth defects are common in babies born to women with diabetes.Adiponectin,(ADP) is a protein produced by adipose tissue, which regulates metabolisms of lipids and glucose and also influences the body response to insulin). It has been studied in Asian Indians and reported that there was an association with polymorphism of Adiponectin gene and diabetes mellitus. In the present study Blood samples were collected from 20 normal and 20 diabetic patients in the age groups of 40-65 years of both sexes. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was found in G allele of ADP 45 intron of adiponectin gene. Our study shows that there was a significant association of G allele with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
