Geboren am 7.2.1812 in Landport bei Portsmouth. Als sein Vater 1823 ins Schuldgefängnis in London kam, mußte Dickens bereits in der Jugend als Hilfsarbeiter arbeiten. Nach unregelmäßigem Schulbesuch wurde er 1826 Anwaltsgehilfe und arbeitete als Parlamentsstenograph.Als Reporter beim "Morning Chronicle" begann er seine Skizzen, die in Buchform als "Pickwick Papers" veröffentlicht wurden und ihn berühmt machten. Von 1836 bis 1841 arbeitete er parallel an verschiedenen Romanen. Es folgten Amerikareisen (1841/42) und 1868.Dickens starb am 9.6.1870 im Alter von 58 Jahren an einem Schlaganfall.
