Aufgelöst wird zunächst, wie die scheinbar tödliche Konfrontation zwischen Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), Watson (Martin Freeman) und Ober-Fiesling Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) im Schwimmbad ein gutes Ende nimmt. Mit Irene Adler (Lara Pulver) bekommt es der junge und arrogante Privatdetektiv mit einer neuen Gegnerin zu tun. Sie ist eine Domina für die feinen Kreise in London, sie steht im Blickpunkt der Ermittlungen in der ersten Episode „Ein Skandal in Belgravia“. Um die „Die Hunde von Baskerville“, die berühmteste aller Holmes-Geschichten, dreht sich die Handlung der zweite Folge: Der Fall führt Holmes und Watson in die Gegend von Dartmoor. Zum Abschluss der zweiten Staffel dürfen sich die Zuschauer auf „Der Reichenbach-Fall“ freuen: Gleich zu Anfang erfährt man, dass Holmes stirbt. Der Showdown im London des 21. Jahrhunderts zwischen dem Privatdetektiv und Professor Moriarty ist der Höhepunkt – und wieder endet die Serie mit einem Cliffhanger.
Die gut geschriebenen Drehbücher stammen erneut von den Serienschöpfern Steven Moffat und Mark Gatiss sowie von Stephen Thompson, für die gelungene deutsche Synchronisation zeichnet einmal mehr die TaunusFilm GmbH verantwortlich. Abgerundet wird die BluRay-Veröffentlichung wieder mit einem ausführlichen Begleitheft, Audiokommentare und einem Blick hinter die Kulissen.
