San Miguel – die Insel vor Santa Barbara ist alles andere als ein irdisches Paradies: öd, schroff, windgepeitscht. Der Abenteurer Will und seine schwindsüchtige Frau Marantha samt Adoptivtochter Edith übersiedeln 1888 ausgerechnet auf das menschenfeindliche Eiland, um Geborgenheit, Glück und Genesung zu finden. Naturgemäß verschlimmert sich Maranthas Zustand: „Es war die Insel, die Insel erdrückte sie . . .“ Auch für Elise und ihren Mann Herbie, die Jahrzehnte später nach San Miguel aufbrechen, um der Zivilisation zu entfliehen, bringt die Insel Fluch statt Segen.
  T. C. Boyles Roman hat die Lebensberichte von Marantha Waters und Elise Lester zum Hintergrund, für eine klassisch erzählte, psychologisch fein austarierte Geschichte über das Haschen des Menschen nach ein bisschen Glück. Während die Ego-Männer umknicken wie die Bäume im Wind, stemmen sich die Frauen dem Schicksal entgegen: „Jeder konnte . . . mit dem Himmel hadern.
