Dass Don Winslow seine Karriere als Schriftsteller beenden und stattdessen lieber Donald Trump auf Twitter bekämpfen möchte, ist schlecht. Für Trump. Und für Winslows Leser. Denn sein neuer Thriller „City on Fire“ zeigt mal wieder, warum Winslow zu den großen Crime-Autoren der Gegenwart gehört. Und warum man ihn deshalb sehr vermissen wird. Das Buch ist der Auftakt zu einer Mafiatrilogie, die er bereits komplett fertig geschrieben hat. Die zwei Fortsetzungen folgen demnächst. Eine Gangsterballade aus den Achtzigerjahren, in der Provinz von Rhode Island. Iren und Italiener kontrollieren den Hafen und die Stadt, zunächst als Partner. Aber dann gibt es wegen einer betrunkenen Liebelei einen Bandenkrieg. Der irische Geldeintreiber Danny steht im Mittelpunkt des blutigen Chaos’. Winslows Satzbau ist gewohnt knapp, das Tempo hoch, die knapp 400 Seiten reichen höchstens für zwei Strandtage. Hoffentlich geht Winslow nicht wirklich in Schriftstellerrente.

Krimis in Kürze: Harry Kämmerer, Jacob Ross, Don Winslow
München kann sehr kriminell sein, wenn man nur lange genug hinschaut. Und Harry Kämmerer und sein Kommissar Karl-Maria Mader geben sich sehr viel Mühe mit dem präzisen Blick auf die Stadt und ihre Viertel. In "Totwald" (Nagel & Kimche, 272 S., br., 18,- Euro) muss Frankreich-Freund, Deneuve-Verehrer und Dackelbesitzer Mader allerdings schon ein bisschen mehr schultern, als ihm und seinem Team guttut.
Kämmerer hat das Ermittlerteam bei dessen zweitem Auftritt sehr liebevoll und detailfreudig entwickelt, aber er ist manchmal zu sehr um besonders originelle, ausgefallene Eigenschaften seiner Figuren bemüht, wenn etwa der Beamte Hummel unbedingt als Krimiautor reüssieren will und immer wieder an sein "liebes Tagebuch" schreibt, während er nach Feierabend zu viel trinkt, um noch einen guten Plot zu entwickeln.
Der Roman und sein Personal bewegen sich zwischen Stadt und ländlichem Bayern, zwischen einem geheimen Bunker und ultraspießiger Schrebergartenkolonie, es gibt Morde und mysteriös Verschwundene, auch einige sehr pointierte Beobachtungen und Dialoge. Aber es gibt leider auch Passagen, mit denen ein Lektor einen Autor nicht davonkommen lassen sollte, weil sie so klingen wie ihre eigene Parodie: "In der Chefetage der Gurkenfabrik herrscht Bestürzung pur. Erstaunlicherweise ist der Tod des Patriarchen noch nicht kommuniziert worden."
Jacob Ross lebt schon lange in England, aber er stammt aus der Karibik, aus Grenada, und man muss nicht ortskundig sein, um in der fiktiven Insel Camaho den Ort wiederzuerkennen, an dem die Vereinigten Staaten im Jahre 1983 glaubten, unbedingt eine Invasion starten zu müssen.
Der Protagonist in "Die Knochenleser" (Suhrkamp, 376 S., br., 15,95 Euro) ist ein Held wider Willen. Das Letzte, was Michael Digson, den sie "Digger" nennen, will, ist es, zur Polizei zu gehen. Er ist der uneheliche Sohn des Polizeichefs. Man erpresst ihn eher dazu, weil er mehr erfahren will über den Tod seiner Mutter. Er absolviert eine forensische Ausbildung in England, und er kann im Lichte einer LED-Leuchte sehr genau analysieren, was die sterblichen Überreste einer Person über deren letzte Momente im Leben preisgeben.
Ross' Prosa ist sehr eigen, manchmal ein wenig elliptisch, er hat ein gutes Auge für die Landschaft und vor allem für die spezifischen Verhältnisse, unter denen die Menschen leben; er versteht etwas von den Folgen, die Korruption in einer Gesellschaft anrichtet, und von den fatalen Spuren, die ein guruhafter Baptisten-Diakon in einer Gemeinschaft ihm ergebener Frauen hinterlässt. "Mach dir nix vor, erzähl keinen Blödsinn" - das ist ein gutes Motto, um einen Roman zu beenden.
Je berühmter er wurde, desto uninteressanter wurden die Bücher, könnte man etwas böswillig sagen. Nach dem großartigen Drogenepos "Tage der Toten" driftete Don Winslow stark in Richtung Konfektion. Nun setzt er noch mal zu einer großen Trilogie an. "City on Fire" (Harper Collins, 398 S., geb., 22,- Euro) spielt dort, wo er herkommt, an der Ostküste, in Providence, Rhode Island. Es ist eine klassische Mafia-Geschichte. Die Filmrechte sind für einen siebenstelligen Betrag schon an Sony Pictures verkauft.
Das Epos handelt von Bandenkriegen und Familienbanden, die Iren und die Italiener teilen und herrschen, den einen gehören die Docks, den anderen das Glücksspiel, beiden die Gewerkschaften. Das geht eine Weile gut in den Achtzigerjahren, dann entsteigt eine Frau an einem schönen Sommertag dem Meer wie die schaumgeborene Venus. Und der allwissende Erzähler markiert sie für den noch ahnungslosen Protagonisten Danny Ryan als klassische Femme fatale.
Winslow schreibt eine schlanke, schnörkellose Prosa, er holt tief Luft für die Trilogie, und er dirigiert auch mühelos ein ausladendes Personal mit ein paar ganz interessanten Frauenfiguren. Das liest sich gut, ist sehr professionell gearbeitet, aber vom irrlichternden jüngsten Sohn bis zum zögerlichen Boss wider Willen ist da nichts, was man nicht schon kennen würde aus ungezählten Mafia-Legenden. Und wenn Winslow mit pathetischen Anleihen bei Homer und Vergil kommt, fragt man sich schon mal: Geht es nicht auch eine Nummer kleiner? PETER KÖRTE
