In den ersten beiden Bänden wurde bereits klar, dass diese Grausamkeit zumindest zu Teilen unerlässlich ist, da eine Welt ohne die Erzengel aus einem einzigen Blurbad bestehen würde.
Die Engel haben allerdings ein Problem: Sie haben ein bestimmtes Gift in ihrem Blut, dass mit der Zeit zu einer tödlichen Menge angesammelt wird. Um sich davon zu reinigen, müssen sie aus geeigneten Menschen Vampire erschaffen. Diese dienen den Engeln dann als Dank für das Geschenk der Unsterblichkeit für hundert Jahre. Und auch danach achten die Engel darauf, dass die Vampire sich an die Regeln halten und keine Menschen töten.
Verfällt ein Vampir trotz der Strafe die ihm dafür droht dem Blutrausch, wird er von einem Engel exekutiert. Allerdings ist es nicht immer einfach, einem solchen Vampir auf die Spur zu kommen.
Dafür gibt es die Gilde der Jäger - ein Zusammenschluss von Menschen, der Jagd auf Vampire macht, die die Regeln gebrochen haben. Unter ihnen gibt es einige, die bereits mit der Gabe zur Jagd geboren worden sind - sie haben keine Wahl als ein Jäger zu werden und sind für Menschen außergewöhnlich stark. Elena ist eine von ihnen. Schreckliche Ereignisse in ihrer Kindheit und der folgende Bruch ihrer Familie liegen in ihrer Dunklen Vergangenheit, dennoch - oder gerade deswegen - ist sie die Beste bekannte Jägerin. Engel aus der ganzen Welt bitten die New Yorkerin um ihre Hilfe.
Raphael, das Kind zweier Erzengel und einer der mächtigsten Engel überhaupt, herrscht über Nordamerika, sein Hauptsitz ist der Engelsturm in New York City. Als ein Erzengel dem Wahnsinn verfällt und die Welt in ein Blutiges Chaos zu stürzen droht, heuert er Elena an um Jagd auf ihn zu machen. Elena hat keine Wahl als dem Befehl des Erzengels zu folgen. Die beiden arbeiten zusammen um den gefallenen Erzengel zu stoppen. Und während diese Aufgabe sie beide beinahe das Leben kostet, verlieben sie sich ineinander.
Elena rettet Raphael das Leben und entkommt selbst dem Tod nur, weil der Erzengel ihr sein Gift einflöt. Statt als Vampir aufzuwachen, öffnet sie die Augen jedoch als Engel. Eine Legende besagt, dass ein Erzengel nur einen Engel zeugen kann, wenn er einen Menschen aufrichtig liebt.
In ihrem Leben als neugeborener Engel muss Elena schnell stark genug werden um fliegen und kämpfen zu können, denn sie muss nicht nur ständig um ihre Autonomie und ihre Rechte in ihrer Beziehung mit einem unendlich mächtigen Erzengel kämpfen, sie hat auch plötzlich so viele Gegner, dass sie sich in ständiger Gefahr befindet.
Zu Beginn von Archangel's Consort sind Elena und Raphael aus einer Zufluchtsstätte der Engel nach New York zurück gekehrt. Sie haben allerdings wenig Zeit sich einzuleben, denn Naturchatastrophen und Vampire die der Blutlust verfallen kündigen das Erwachen eines sehr alten und sehr mächtigen Erzengels an. Und als wäre das nicht schon genug, handelt es sich dabei auch noch um Raphaels Mutter Caliane, die ihn bei ihrer letzten Begegnug beinahe getötet hätte.
Während Raphael auf dem schmalen Grat zum Wahnsinn balanciert, ist Elena die einzige, die ihn in der Realität halten kann. Und in einem weitern Kampf auf Leben und Tod ist die Liebe zwischen den Beiden die einzige Rettung für den Erzengel.
Das Buch ist absolut zu empfehlen - die Spannung lässt nichts zu wünschen übrig, der Schreibstil der Autorin ist so schön, dass man manche Sätze wieder und wieder liest und die Szenen zwischen Elena und Raphael sind so intim und besonders, dass es beinahe weh tut und zu Tränen rührt.
