On Certainty gathers all the reflections Wittgenstein jotted down during the last year and a half of his life. They outline an effort to validate subjective certainty regarding the external world against the objective certainty of mathematics. In 1949, Wittgenstein spent time in the United States, where Norman Malcolm rekindled his interest in G. E. Moore and his work *A Defence of Common Sense*, in which Moore argued that common sense allows us to know with certainty that certain things are true. These notes form a thematically coherent body of work dedicated to substantiating the truth found in common sense. They remain in their initial manuscript form, as the philosopher did not have time to revise them for publication.
