Die Figuren aus Elizabeth Strouts Romanen sind mir so ans Herz gewachsen, dass ich sehnsüchtig auf ein neues Buch von ihr gewartet habe. Diesmal steht Bob Burgess, ein Strafverteidiger und enger Freund von Lucy Barton, im Mittelpunkt. Während der Corona-Pandemie pflegten sie ausgedehnte Spaziergänge zu machen, was sie nun wöchentlich fortsetzen. Die beiden haben eine besondere Gabe, nämlich anderen Menschen zuzuhören. Lucy kommt diese Fähigkeit auch beruflich zugute, denn von den Geschichten, die ihr die legendäre Strout-Figur Olive Knitteridge erzählt, kann sie sich als Schriftstellerin inspirieren lassen. Bei Bob liegt die Sache etwas anders. Er hört sich nicht nur die Probleme und Fehltritte seiner Mitmenschen an, sondern absorbiert sie förmlich und wird zum „sin-eater“. Er übernimmt die Verteidigung eines Mordverdächtigen, doch diese Handlung ist eher ein Nebenschauplatz. Es geht vielmehr um die Geschichten, die die Figuren in diesem Roman miteinander austauschen oder selbst erleben und die Frage aufwerfen, was das Leben ausmacht. Es geht um Einsamkeit, Liebe, Schuld und was die Menschen verbindet. Mit welcher Intensität, Warmherzigkeit und Melancholie Elizabeth Strout von Schicksalen einfacher Menschen und kleinen, aber bedeutsamen Gesten erzählt, ist einfach fantastisch.

Durch Zufall entdeckt - und nun lässt mich die Erinnerung an dieses Buch nicht mehr los. Es besteht hauptsächlich aus der Wiedergabe von Gesprächen, Wahrnehmungen und Gedanken, was mich zunächst sehr irritiert hat. Doch es gab mir das Gefühl, wirklich aus den Personen (ja, mehrere Perspektiven) herauszuschauen. Das Leben ist so schön alltäglich (nur am Schluss wurde es mir etwas zu dicke..) - und die alltäglichen Begebenheiten behalten auch in ihrem Scheitern ihren Sinn. "If its love its love" - dieser Satz - und seine Bedeutung im Buch - ist mir besonders nahe gegangen. Ein tolles Lese-Erlebnis. Dazu passend fiel mir als nächstes "Dieses eine Leben" in die Hände - das die philosophische Perspektive auf das Thema Lebenswertschätzung behandelt. Bücher.....! :)
