Auf einer zweiten Ebene beschreibt der Roman das Leben von Turlupin, einem einfältigen Findelkind, der sich, nachdem er aus einem brennenden Haus gerettet wurde, zu großen Dingen berufen fühlt. Er ist ein Träumer, zudem introvertiert und fatalistisch. Sein irrationales Verhalten wird besonders deutlich, wenn er Bettlern begegnet.
Auf einer dritten Ebene geht es um die Macht des Zufalls. Dieser beeinflusst maßgeblich das Leben von Turlupin und auch den weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte. Es gibt zahlreiche zufällige Begegnungen, die weitreichende Konsequenzen haben. Insofern thematisiert der Roman die Frage, wie offen letztlich Geschichte ist. Hätten viele Entwicklungen, aufgrund kleiner Zufälle, nicht auch völlig anders verlaufen können?
Auf einer vierten Ebene behandelt Leo Perutz ein Thema, welches auch schon in „Der schwedische Reiter“ eine zentrale Bedeutung hatte, nämlich Identität. Diese hat gleich eine doppelte Bedeutung. Einerseits übernimmt Turlupin die Identität eines anderen Menschen und auf der anderen Seite hält er sich selbst für jemand anderen.
In der Summe konstruiert Perutz auf wenigen Seiten einen vielschichtigen und tiefsinnigen Roman, der sehr zu empfehlen ist. Das erste Kapitel, in dem der historische Hintergrund beschrieben wird, hat mich wegen der vielen Namen zunächst abgeschreckt. Es ist aber nicht mehr als ein Vorwort zur eigentlichen Geschichte, die im zweiten Kapitel beginnt.
