Dieses Phänomen zieht vor allem bei Vorkommnissen in der Jugendphase Ausgrenzung und Mobbing nach sich. Die Thematik des Debutromans der US-amerikanischen Autorin Erin Jade Lange, „Butter“, ist demnach noch immer außerordentlich aktuell. Im Folgenden möchte ich näher auf genanntes Werk eingehen und seine Stärken und Schwächen herausarbeiten.
Dass die Autorin schreiben kann, beweist sie ihrer Leserschaft bereits in der Exposition ihres Romans. Ihr Schreibstil wirkt jederzeit ehrlich und lebendig, sodass man schnell in die Handlung einsteigen kann. Das Szenario ist dabei genauso schockierend wie realistisch, verliert dabei über die dreihundert Seiten Länge niemals an Anziehungskraft und Reiz. Das Ende jedoch möchte sich nicht ganz stimmig in die Geschichte einfügen und fühlt sich unbefriedigend, fast kitschig an – und ist doch auf seine eigene Weise genial, dazu später mehr.
Die Hauptfigur, die den Spitznamen „Butter“ trägt und somit auch als Namensgeber für das Buch fungiert, wird gelungen vorgestellt und dem Leser ist es möglich, einen Eindruck über die innere als auch äußere Handlung des Protagonisten zu gewinnen. Dabei agiert dieser mit nachvollziehbaren Motivationen; die Entwicklung, die der Charakter im Laufe des Romans durchschreitet, erscheint glaubwürdig. Die Figur lernt während der sich überschlagenden Ereignisse wichtige Komponenten, durch die ihm der Wert des Lebens klarwerden, und bietet der Leserschaft eine Fülle von Argumenten, die gegen jegliche Art von Selbstverletzung und Suizid sprechen, sodass sich die Lektüre sicherlich gut für die Verwendung im Unterricht eignet.
Die rasante Geschwindigkeit, mit der sich die Ereignisse fortentwickeln, lässt nicht nur die Hauptperson selbst stutzig werden, sondern reißt den Leser mit einer ungeheuren Wucht mit, dass man sich dieser Sogwirkung nicht selbst entziehen kann. Ich ertappte mich selbst in dem Gedankengang, dass ich mit diesem Internetphänomen mitgefiebert und auf ein explosives Finale gehofft habe, bis man selbst wieder zur Vernunft kommt und einem die moralische Verwerflichkeit der Umgebung, in der man sich bewegt, deutlich wird. Und genau das ist die absolute Stärke des Buches: Die Leserschaft wird selbst Teil der Geschichte!
Ich stelle mir selbst während des Lesens immer wieder die Frage: Wie würde ich mich verhalten? Was, wenn so etwas wirklich geschieht? Würde irgendjemand eingreifen? Ich, zum Beispiel? Die Autorin baut geschickt verschiedene Anekdoten von großer Aktualität in die Geschichte ein, ohne zu sehr mit erhobenem Zeigefinger zu erzählen. Die Aufgabe des Lesers ist es, die Balance zwischen bloßem Beobachter und der Einhaltung moralischer Regeln zu halten. Und das ist gar nicht so einfach.
Einige Ungereimtheiten trüben das bis dato so rein positiv gewaschene Bild, die ich hier nicht ungenannt lassen kann. Das würde sonst meiner Position als abwägender und fairer Rezensent widersprechen. Zum einen finde ich, dass einige Geschichtenstränge, die dem Vorantreiben der gesamten Handlung nicht viel Essenzielles hinzuzufügen haben, zu viel Erzählzeit zum Entfalten erhalten. Ohne diese wäre „Butter“ ein wenig knackiger gewesen, hätte vermutlich nicht diese von Kapitel zu Kapitel Spannung aufbauende Atmosphäre gehabt. Ich denke, dass man einen größeren Fokus auf die falschen Freundschaften, die entstehen, hätten legen können, um so die Dramatik und Folgenschwere eines voranstehenden, öffentlichen Suizids zu intensivieren.
