Cassandra Palmer ist nun schon fast einen Monat Pythia und ihr Leben wird mit jedem Tag komplizierter. Da ist zum Beispiel Mircea Basarab, ein verdammt gutaussehender Vampir aus dem Rumänien der 15. Jahrhunderts, an den sie fast ihr ganzes Leben lang durch einen Geis gebunden war. Nun weiß Cassie nicht, was sie fühlt. Sind ihre Gefühle für Mircea echt, oder nur ein Echo der Geis?
John Pritkin, der geächtete Kriegsmagier des weißen Kreises (einer Vereinigung angeblich guter Magier) hat es ihr auch angetan. Er ist zwar meist schlecht gelaunt und sein Vater war ein Dämon, aber dennoch verwirrt er Cassies Gefühle auf (lebens-)gefährliche Weise.
Als wenn Cassie nicht genug zu tun hätte ihre Gefühle zu ordnen und in den Griff zu bekommen, droht Apollo die Erde wieder in seine Gewalt zu bringen, und die einzige Möglichkeit das zu verhindern, währe eine Zusammenarbeit aller Vampire und der Magier des Weißen Kreises zu erwirken. Aber die angeblich guten Magier haben ganz andere Pläne mit Cassandra, denn ihr Anführer kocht seit einiger Zeit im geheimen ein eigenes, illegales Süppchen, das auf keinen Fall ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit gelangen darf, daher geht das treffen der amtierenden Pyhtia gehörig schief und endet mit der Zerstörung von MAGIC (Metaphysical Alliance for Greater Interspecies Cooperation), des Hauptquartiers der magischen Wesen dieses Planeten, und Cassies Visionen kündigen noch schlimmere Auswirkungen dieses Krieges an.
Die überlebenden Vampire beziehen somit in Casanovas Casino in Las Vegas Quartier, das nun nicht nur vor Kriegsmagiern sondern nun auch vor Vampiren platzt, so dass Cassie mal wieder in eine Besenkammer ziehen muss, und dass zu einer Zeit in der die Vampire verzweifelt nach einem Verräter aus den eigenen Reihen suchen.
„Curse the Dawn“ ist der vierte Band der Cassandra Palmer Reihe. Ähnlich wie seine Vorgänger beschreibt auch dieser Band nur wenige Tage (2 Tage in diesem Fall) in Cassies Leben, diese jedoch sehr ausführlich. Cassies Leben ist eine einzige Flucht vor Leuten, die sie töten wollen. Irgendwie hat es jeder auf die eine oder andere Weise auf sie abgesehen und in all dem Chaos soll sie ihren Job als Phythia erledigen.
Die erste Hälfte des Buches ist zwar rasant, entbehrt aber leider den Witz und die Ironie der vorherigen Bücher: zu viel Mircea und zu viel Vampirpolitik, dafür kein Billy Joe und kaum Pritkin. Ab der zweiten Hälfte wird es wieder deutlich besser, Cassie baut Mist und sie und Pritkin landen in recht ungewöhnlichen Schwierigkeiten, die jedoch leider irgendwie etwas klischeehaft und schon auf diverse Arten filmisch ausgelutscht sind.
Cassie lernt in diesem Teil mehr über ihren Vater und dessen Vergangenheit, das Tony Problem ist auch noch nicht gelöst und wie es mit ihr und Mircea weitergehen wird steht noch in den Sternen, also genug Platz für eine oder mehrere Fortsetzungen.
Fazit: Rasant und spannend wie die Vorgänger, jedoch nicht mehr so witzig und ironisch wie diese. Diesmal geht es deutlich mehr um Vampirpolitik und Diplomatie, was teilweise schon zu einige Lägen führt. Dafür jedoch nutzt Cassie endlich wieder Fähigkeiten, die man aus den ersten Bänden kennt und lernt auch ein wenig über ihre Macht hinzu.
Dieses Buch ist ohne Vorkenntnis der 3 Vorgängerbände nur schwer bis gar nicht zu verstehen, sollte also nicht als einzelner Roman gelesen werden.

Doreena Basarab ist ein Dhampir, also halb Mensch halb Vampir. Ihr Vater ließ ihre Mutter sitzen, als er erfuhr, dass sie schwanger war. Ihre Mutter gab Doreena an Zigeuner ab, als die Dorfgemeinschaft erfuhr was für ein Wesen sie geboren hatte, denn ein Dhampir ist gefährlich für sich und seine Umwelt. Dhampire neigen dazu ab und an einfach mal auszuticken und dabei ihrer Umwelt großen Schaden zuzufügen, daher werden die meisten ihrer Art auch nicht sonderlich alt. Doreena jedoch hat es geschafft 500 Jahre zu überleben. Sie ist weder Teil der menschlichen, noch der übernatürlichen Gesellschaft, keiner will wirklich mit ihr zu tun haben. Sie hat es gelernt ihre dhampir Agressionen produktiv zu nutzen und ist Headhunter in der übernatürlichen Gemeinschaft. Sie eliminiert Vampire, die sich nicht nach den Regeln spielen.
Dementsprechend ist sie wenig begeistert als ihr Vater plötzlich nach einigen Jahrzehnten wieder mit einem Auftrag bei ihr auftaucht der es in sich hat: Sie soll Dracula fangen und unschädlich machen, dabei hat Doreena wirklich andere Probleme. Ihre Mitbewohnerin Claire wurde entführt und ist seit einem Monat verschollen, sie hat keine Lust nach Dracula zu suchen. Aber man lässt ihr keine Wahl. Als Hilfe wird ihr Louis Cesare zu Seite gestellt, ein arroganter, französischer Vampir. Doreena und Louis Cesare sind sich auf Anhieb unsympathisch.
Die Doreena Basarab Reihe ist ein Ableger der Karen Chance Reihe um Kassandra Palmer. Das erste Mal begegnet sie dem Leser im vierten Band ("Curse the Dawn" - "Unwiderstehlich untot").
Dieses Buch (oder besser diese Reihe, denn ein weiterer Band ist bereits erschienen), spielt in derselben Welt und etwa zur selben Zeit wie die Kassandra Palmer Reihe und ist diesen Büchern auch insgesamt sehr ähnlich. Viele Personen finden sich in beiden Buchreihen wieder, wie Radu, Dracula, Casanova oder Louis Cesare. Dory ist Kassandra auch von ihrer Art sehr ähnlich, sie ist eine starke und clevere Frau, die ihren Weg auch bewaffnet geht. Dory kann mit Waffen umgehen, ist eine ausgezeichnete Kämpferin, hat die stark ausgeprägten Vampirsinne und kennt sich auch mit fiesen magischen Überraschungen aus. Und auch dieses Buch erzählt nur wenige Tage, diese aber ausführlich und sehr actiongeladen.
Dem weiblichen Leser werden jedoch mit einem einfachen Kniff übermäßige Kampfszenen erspart. Tickt Dory aus, dann kann sie sich nicht mehr daran erinnern, was in dieser Zeit passierte. Man erlebt also den Anfang des Kampfes und den Schluss und erspart sich die langweiligen Details, also perfekt für die weibliche Klientel der Bücher. Es gibt immer noch genug blutige Szenen, die teils sehr ausführlich beschrieben werden, dafür zum Ausgleich aber auch einige prickelnde, ausführliche erotische Szenen.
Midnight's Daughter spielt laut Aussage der Autorin zur selben Zeit wie "Curse the Dawn" - "Unwiderstehlich untot" und endet kurz nach diesem vierten Band. Dabei ergeben sich aber einige Ungereimtheiten.
SPOILER:
- MAGIC wird in Band 4 (Curse the Dawn - Unwiderstehlich untot) zerstört, in Midnight's Daughter herrscht da nur ziemliches Durcheinander
- Es geht hauptsächlich um die Krieg zwischen schwarzen und weißen Magiern, währen Kassandra eigentlich gegen den Gott Apollo kämpft.
- Wein brennt nicht, dafür ist der Alkoholgehalt zu gering

Das Wort "Bergtroll" scheint es in den amerikanischen Wortschatz geschafft zu haben, ein wirklich erstaunlicher deutscher Export.
Fazit: Wer die Kassandra Palmer Reihe liebt wird auch Doreena Basarab toll finden. Die Charaktere der Protagonisten sind sich sehr ähnlich und überlappen. Auch der Erzählstil ist der gleiche witzig ironische wie in der Kassandra Palmer Reihe.

"Touch the Dark" ist das erste Buch einer neuen Vampir-Reihe.
Cassandra Palmer, benannt nach der griechischen Seherin Cassandra, ist eine begabte aber ungeübte Hellseherin. Antonio, ein Vampir, der sie nach dem Unfall ihrer Eltern aufnimmt und erzieht, achtet sehr darauf, dass ihre Fähigkeiten ihm zwar helfen, nicht jedoch stark genug werden, um ihm gefährlich zu werden. Umgeben von Grausamkeit und Gewalt, von furchtbaren Visionen heimgesucht, wird aus dem Mädchen Cassandra die starke und eigenwillige Frau Cassie. Zwar kann sie nicht verhindern, dass ihre Visionen dem verhassten Ziehvater seine Mafia-Geschäfte erleichtern oder gar ermöglichen, jedoch schafft sie es, ihre zweite Fähigkeit vor ihm zu verstecken. Cassie ist in der Lage Geister zu sehen und mit ihnen zu sprechen. Diese meist eher nervende Gabe hilft ihr jedoch bei der Flucht, als sie erfährt, dass Antonio etwas mit dem Tod ihrer Eltern zu tun hat. Aus dem Untergrund heraus versucht sie den Vampir auf Grund seiner Mafia-Geschäfte hinter Schloss und Riegel zu bringen, doch leider kommen sie und die Polizei zu spät. Antonio und alle Spuren sind verschwunden. Sie hat es nicht geschafft ihm Einhalt zu gebieten und doch konnte sie ihn genug schwächen, um sich seiner ewigen Rache sicher zu sein. Nicht nur das sie, sein wichtigster Besitz, verschwunden ist, nein sie hatte es auch gewagt, sich gegen ihn zu erheben.
3 Jahre lebte sie als Kronzeuge versteckt, dann findet er sie.
Eine Todesanzeige taucht auf dem Bildschirm ihres Bürorechners auf, mit exakter Todesuhrzeit. Nun heißt es rennen.
Mit Hilfe von ihrem Lieblingsgeist Billy jagt sie durch eine turbulente und sehr spannende Geschichte. Karen Chance nutzt das erste Buch um den Leser in ihre eigene Welt der Fantasy einzuführen. Vampire, Magier, Feen und Fabelwesen leben zusammen in und hinter unserer Welt und Cassie wird bald eine wichtige Rolle spielen müssen. Ein längst vergessenes Erbe macht sie zu einem der begehrtesten Wesen für die vielen Parteien, jeder will die Möglichkeit der Macht in seine Hände bekommen.
Es ist vielleicht nicht immer leicht den vielen Erklärungen zu folgen, wenn Karen Chance ihre Welt erklärt, doch für mich wurde es niemals langweilig die verzwickten und manchmal recht amüsanten Verbindungen zu lesen. Ein Politkrimi im Land der Mythen. Manchmal kam mir die nicht immer unterschwellige Erotik etwas zu aufgesetzt vor, als gehöre ein wenig Soft-Porno zum Genre. Doch die Charaktere und ihre Ambivalenz haben mir sehr gut gefallen und nun bin ich natürlich auch daran interessiert wie es in den nächsten Teilen weitergeht.
Über die Übersetzung des Buches in die deutsche Sprache kann ich nichts sagen, doch im englischen ist es flüssig und locker geschrieben. Passend zu der Hauptfigur Cassie ist die Sprache frech und resolut, wie ich es gern lese.
Auch wenn die Handlung durch die vielen Verstrickungen hier und da etwas schwächelt ist es ein sehr gutes Buch und ist sicherlich für viele Vampir- oder Fantasy-Fans genau das Richtige.
