Gerard Manley Hopkins, geboren 1844 in Stratford (Essex), gestorben 1889 in Dublin, konvertierte und trat 1868 in den Jesuitenorden ein. Seine Gedichte, die erstmals 1918 veröffentlicht wurden, wirkten stark auf die Dichter der Nachkriegsgeneration, u. a. auf T. S. Eliot.
