John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and politician. He pursued his literary and political careers in parallel, and is best known for his series of adventure novels featuring Richard Hannay. His 1915 novel The Thirty-Nine Steps has been filmed several times, including the 1935 version directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Buchan was raised to the peerage in 1935, and, as Lord Tweedsmuir, became 15th Governor General of Canada, a position in which he served until his death.
