R.A. Salvatore's first published novel, The Crystal Shard, introduced the world to the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden whose ongoing adventures continue to captivate readers all around the world. His books have been translated into more than fourteen different languages and regularly debut on the New York Times best seller list, including his most recent series featuring Drizzt, The Neverwinter(TM) Saga. Salvatore's love of fantasy, and literature in general, began in college when he was given a copy of J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings as a Christmas gift. He promptly changed his major from computer science to journalism, graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications from Fitchburg State College, then returned for the degree he always cherished, the Bachelor of Arts in English. Soon after that, he began writing seriously, penning the novel that would become Echoes of the Fourth Magic. His novel, The Silent Blade, won the Origins award and in 1997, he donated his letters, manuscripts, and other professional papers to his alma mater, forming the library's R.A. Salvatore Collection. A native of Massachusetts, Salvatore continues to live in his home state along with his wife Diane.
