This is a story about how I discovered something special inside of me, not talent, rather the capacity to turn adversity into a gift. I came to find out that my talent was to enjoy and thrive on suffering and longer than most. Maybe even to understand that this is even more important than anything else, for we are more likely to face many challenges over a lifetime.

Jessica Douglas is a three-time World Champion mountain biker.

Without a chance diagnosis of cancer at age 14, this may never have happened. According to Jess, through adversity, the succession of life lessons were 'gifts', choosing to see the opportunities in hardships and view failure as the way to unlock the secrets to success.

The most significant and life-changing event occurred at a mountain bike race in 2006. Jess was 32 and decided then and there; she would reach for the stars. It was simple, to get better, all she had to do was focus on minor improvements, over time, not be awesome today, or tomorrow, or event next week.

This was the 1% Rule to Success.

Focus on 1 task at a time.

1 day at a time.

1 week at a time.

1 month at a time.

Improve just one thing at a time by 1%.

In a year's time, you will have improved.

You cannot fail.

Every single day, focus on the 1%'ers.

The methodology meant it made the seemingly impossible - possible.

No shortcuts. Consistent, persistent 1% efforts, developing her grit and determination despite questions of self-worth.

Revelling in hard work and dreaming big led her to the big moment of winning on a world stage. Jess described it as 'Cracking the Code for life', using simple 1%'ers every day of her life, in the good times and the bad- through victorious wins on race day and in business and through her darkest periods of depression.

It's a story that has many triumphs and many many failures, but it's real and raw, proving that anyone can have a go at anything if they only just start today
