We should, of course, have waited patiently outside the city walls until morning came and the gates would open. But Fierter wanted in. He cried out to a couple of guards on the city wall high above us. After a lot of haggling, they agreed on a price and sent down a rope ladder. On my way up, I was scared and tried not to look down. Looking up I could see the full moon. It felt as if I was crawling up the ladder and straight into it.
