Robert Newell and Joseph Meek were always ready to tell humorous stories of their fur trapping days and to share lighthearted quotes from Shakespeare, even though this was a time of horrible events - the Whitman Massacre, Cayuse Wars, and the Mexican War. These two men struggled with these problems while working to build Oregon Country into a functioning part of the union with laws, courts, and a newspaper called The Oregon Spectator. When they crossed paths with Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé tribe and a number of the Black pioneers of Oregon, it became apparent that, unlike many of the newcomers arriving on wagon trains, Newell and Meek wanted Oregon to be a home available to all. Then a baffling situation occurred that was unlike anything these fearless mountain men had ever encountered - a woman arrived from 2003.
