World Wars tend to make young people grow up rather fast. The reality of death and destruction, responsibilities at home and abroad, all account for resilience and a strong sense of duty. But that didn't stop the young people from dreaming, nor did it stop them from considering the ethics of life. Noel Rangott grew up in the outskirts of Melbourne, she watched as the world turned. The old ways of the bush were dying out along with her childhood, she was growing up in the 1940s into a world that was tearing apart. Like the other young people of her time, she was dutiful and worked hard. Noel was fifteen years old when she filled two exercises books with her poetry. Her mother was a strong woman of the roaring '20s with a love of music and a good time. In those days, parties were still centred around the family piano. But there was little time for joy, the war was raging, brothers and sons were dead, and Noel's mother, Dorothy, had a business to run. Noel, who was a sensitive and thoughtful girl, was able to draw on her creativity through poetry, drawing and painting to decipher her world and speak her peace.
