The two Vinnys grew up in the same Bronx neighborhood. VINNY ALFONSO in the brighter of the two. He is always the teacher's pet, never from hard work but from his good looks and ass kissing personality. VINNY CABRASE kisses no-one's ass and is not a great student, though he works hard at it. From the start they don't like each other. A random remark from another neighborhood kid links them. The loudmouth kid sees them walking towards their friends and he yells, "look, here come the two Vinnies." Somehow that one moment links the two together.

They go into the shoeshine business. They do well shinning the shoes of working class men in the Crosby Avenue bars. Alfonso uses his money to buy fashionable clothes that his single mother can't or won't. Cabrese uses his to help his family. A mean old drunk harasses Cabrese in their favorite bar, The Shamrock. Cabrese laughs it off, but Alfonso won't. They beat and rob the old man. Cabrese is caught and Alfonso escapes. Cabrese is sent to jail and Alfonso goes to college in Boston.

Old man's grandson is devastated by the beating, and he believes the eventual death of his grandfather. He swears revenge. While Cabrese is in jail Eugene, the grandson, murders Cabrese's mother. In prison Cabrese has become the protector of a mob boss. He leaves prison with a serious heroin addiction and a job working for the mob boss's son.

Alfonso is doing well in college. He has others doing most of the work and he meets the rich woman of his dreams. Her father gives him a job in his investment firm which he screws up. Eugene manages to murder Alfonso's mistress. His wife kicks him out and he loses his job. He's back in the Bronx, a place he despises, living with his mother.

Cabrese is doing terrible but he meets a woman who turns his life around. He gets treatment and is off heroin. He wants to return to his beloved Bronx, and she follows him. Eugene kills the woman. Detectives have connected the three murders because Eugene had left a plastic shamrock at each scene.

The two Vinnys accidently meet at The Shamrock. Both are miserable, Alfonso is back where he started after reaching the heights of wealth and prestige. The love of his life has been murdered and some nut tried to kill his mother. Cabrese had lost the woman who saved his life and who had helped him reconcile with his father. When the police tell them about the shamrocks at the crime scene both realize what had started the murders. Eugene has been following Cabrese and he loses his temper and jumps him. Cabrese fights him off, but now he knows what the murderer looks like.

Eugene makes another attempt to kill Alfonso's mother. He doesn't succeed and things don't work out well for him.
