Many probability concepts seem counterintuitive at first, and the successful student must in effect train him or herself to think in a totally new way. Mastery of probability takes a lot of time, and only comes from solving many, many problems. The aim of this text and its companion, The Probability Workbook (coming soon), is to present the subject of probability as a tutor would. Probability concepts are explained in everyday language and worked examples are presented in abundance. In addition to paper-and-pencil solutions, solution strategies using Microsoft Excel functions are given. All mathematical symbols are explained, and the mathematical rigor is kept on an algebra level; calculus is avoided. This book is written for quality practitioners who are currently performing statistical and probability analyses in their workplaces, and for those seeking to learn probability concepts for the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or Master Black Belt exams.

Autorenporträt
Mary McShane-Vaughn earned her PhD in industrial engineering and MS in statistics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a BS in industrial engineering from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan. She is currently principal at University Training Partners, a company that develops and delivers Lean- Six Sigma and statistical training to hospitals, corporations, and universities, both in-person and online. Previously, Dr. McShane-Vaughn was a tenured faculty member at Southern Polytechnic State University (now Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, Georgia. For eight years she directed and grew the Master of Science in Quality Assurance program and taught Statistics, Statistical Quality Control, Linear Regression, and Design of Experiments in the graduate program. Before her career in academics, Dr. McShane-Vaughn worked for 15 years as a quality engineer and statistician in the automotive, medical device manufacturing, consumer products testing, and revenue management industries. Dr. McShane-Vaughn served as the Six Sigma Black Belt exam chair for the American Society for Quality (ASQ) from 2010 to 2012 and was an examiner for the Georgia Oglethorpe Award, Georgia's equivalent of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. She currently serves on the editorial review board for Six Sigma Forum. Dr. McShane- Vaughn is a senior member of ASQ and a member of the American Statistical Association. She holds ASQ certifications as a Six Sigma Black Belt, Quality Engineer, and Reliability Engineer.
