In the last couple years of his life Daniel Boone kept a journal about his final days in Missouri. In recently discovered pages, he tells an exciting story about his grandson James. He explains, in his backwoods way of talking, how James borrowed his famed Kentucky long-rifle without permission, to go hunting. The rifle and his horse were stolen from him by a band of renegade Sioux Indians in what the famous frontiersman called, My Grandson's Folly.
Though Boone is half-blind he sets out with his best friend Junebug, to rescue his rifle. Though his friend objects they bring James along as Daniel tells him, "It will surely be dangerous and more than likely will put some bark on the boy…if he makes it."
