Autorenporträt
Victoria Benedictsson was born as Victoria Maria Bruzelius in rural Sweden in 1850. She was brought up by her father and received an extensive education, which was at that time reserved mainly for boys. When she was twenty-one, she married the widower Christian Benedictsson, who brought with him five children from his previous marriage.

She is known mainly for her novels dealing with social issues as well as a number of stories about country life and other novels dealing with social issues. Her play, The Enchantment (written in 1850), was only discovered and published after her death and not performed until 1910.

Following the success of her novel Money (published under a male synonym), Victoria Benedictsson moved to Stockholm, where she quickly became involved in literary circles, befriending Ibsen and Strindberg, who supposedly based the character of Miss Julie on her. At that time she also met the literary critic Georg Brandes, with whom she embarked on a scandalous and very public affair. Following his rejection of her as a lover, and, more importantly, a writer (he refused to review her novel), she committed suicide in 1888.
