Peter Cavendish leaves the RAF after 12 years as a jet pilot and intends to carry on flying with commercial airlines, but he is bequeathed an arable farm in Dorset and changes his mind. He buys a light aircraft to fly from his farm and soon afterwards his old school friend, Roger, invites him to have lunch with him, where he tells Peter all about his new French mistress, Nicole. A few days later Roger phones Peter in the dead of night and tells him that he has accidently killed Nicole while playing sex games. Roger begs for help and after a heated argument, Peter reluctantly agrees to take the dead girl away and bury her on his farm, but changes his mind and takes the naked body in his aircraft out over the sea in the early hours of the morning and dumps it. Peter is distressed by what he has done and confides in his wealthy Aunt Paula and asks for her advice. Soon afterwards he receives a phone call from a stranger, Richard Templeton, who invites Peter to his home in Wallingford, where he tells him that there is a dead girl in the house and asks Peter to dispose of the body after offering him ten thousand pounds to do so.

He reluctantly agrees and disposes of the body at night over the sea before contacting Roger and blaming him for informing Templeton, but Roger denies knowing Templeton.

Within days Templeton's wife contacts Peter and asks him to visit their home again and he does so and discovers she is alone before she tempts him to see her pleasure room, where she demands he has sex with her. After a violent struggle, Peter manages to escape this nymphomaniac and meets Charles Macmillan, a Government Minister and Mrs Templeton's lover, in the hallway of the house. From then on, Peter is involved by Macmillan and his wealthy Russian friends in a web of sexual intrigue and murder for the 'greater good' of the country, which ends with surprising twists and turns.
