And this is so, not only in times of war but also in times of peace. The activities of this social sphere - production, testing and maintenance of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons - generate significant quantities of toxic substances that contaminate the earth's soil, air and water.
Although in recent years awareness of this phenomenon has begun, many governments do not provide sufficient data to "denounce" the excessive use of resources by the military. This lack of data prevents establishing precise limits to the harmful activity of the armed forces.
The most specific data comes from the United States, undoubtedly because most of the military activities worldwide are carried out in that country. On the other hand, the data offered by third-world countries in which military spending rose from 6% in 1965 to 20% in the mid-80s is scarce.
