The story revolves around a group of friends, primarily focusing on Bert, Sam, Sara, and Lily. William Eaton has been professor at Johns Hopkins University for 40 years. He has managed an undeveloped forest of 180 acres in northern Maine since 1969. He has no previous experience writing fiction. He has been married for 50 years and has two sons and five grandchildren.
