My interest in questions of human organisation has grown ever more urgent as the answers recede. I managed a commercial photo agency during the birth of the web. For ten years I lead a project that helped men investigate their relationship with their work, supporting and responding to the changing role of women. This culminated in my doctoral research. Since 2010, I have supervised doctoral students at Ashridge-Hult Business School. I also co-founded the organisation development consultancy Mayvin.co.uk. We help our clients in Government, commerce and 3rd sector navigate the increasing complexity of their environment. Since 2010, James Traeger has supervised doctoral students at Ashridge-Hult Business School. I am a Reader in Management and Organisational Learning. I arrived in academia having been at the sharp end of organizational change within the UK's National Health Service supporting both large and small scale projects. I became curious about the rhetoric of organizational change. The talk of rationality and its scientific ways rarely matched my experience of politics, power, good and nefarious intent often all wrapped together but through which positive progress was often possible. It was this curiosity and a doctorate in change management that led me to academia and this book.
