After quarreling with her mother over her life choices, Morgan the dwarf meets a strange old man in the woods. The man is a wizard, and for some reason he wants to teach her wizardry. Reluctantly she agrees, despite magic being considered heresy among the dwarves, and soon after she is found out and cast out of dwarven society forever. After one last act of defiance against those who would banish her, she is forced to escape her old life and the problems her antisocial personality created. The thieves and miscreants she encounters on the road are the least of her worries, as her notoriously short temper wears out her welcome at every turn.

With nowhere else to go, Morgan joins the crew of the merchant ship Wave Cutter as their ship's wizard, attempting to escape yet another self inflicted problem. After surviving a vicious pirate attack, the ship is forced to make a dangerous delivery to the captain's homeland, a place he is no longer welcome.

Meanwhile, naval captain Inasimud will stop at nothing to rid the seas of pirates. Through his over zealousness he mistakes the Wave Cutter for a pirate ship, and in so doing, finds the only man to have ever escaped his clutches; the current captain of the Wave Cutter. Despite all this, his real problem is the terrible secret that he must hide at all costs, a secret that is slowly driving him mad.
