Sent to the Eastern front he fought against grim odds as the Red Army advanced; always pushed back, he and his comrades formed part of the last defenders of Berlin. Eager to avenge themselves, the Russians sent many Germans far to the east, to work off their blood-debt in Siberia or die in the attempt. The author recounts the horrors of the freezing conditions, meagre food and brutal treatment of the prisoners of war. Sustained by his religious faith in the face of the unimaginable hardship, he endured three years in the camps, and survived to emigrate to America.
