What surprised many was not only the fact that this Jay Gibson was a black gangster passing as a white man but that he wooed Mary's best friend, Alice Sayre, and manipulated her into becoming his accomplice. After setting the fire and murdering Mary, the two lovers set their sights on Canada where they met their bloody end.
