However, Mary struggled through life and raised and supported two children as a divorcee and single mom. She went on to own and operate a number of restaurants, taverns and other businesses. She also worked as a high fashion model in New York City in the 1940's and was also a professional chef at leading hotels in New York City such as the famed Essex House. She also dated and had relationships both with movie stars and mobsters. From all accounts as described in her diary/journal pages, Mary Basits Kuhns led an exceptional and interesting life.
